12months12changes check in

At the beginning of this year, I set out 12 changes I wanted to make in 2014, one for each month.

12 months 12 changes

Now that we are a few months into the year, I thought it was time for a check in.

To be honest, overall it hasn’t been going too well, but let’s take it month by month.

January – Keep in Touch

I have a big family and they mean the world to me, but they probably have no idea because I do a terrible job of keeping in touch with them! My goal was to talk to my parents once a week and reach out to each of my siblings at least once a month in some way – call, email, text, or… smoke signals?

I did a good job of this in January, but since then… not so much. This is something I really want to get better about, which is why I set it for January – it was a top priority! I feel like I may need a more coherent strategy to improve. Any tips?

The idea behind spreading my goals over 12 months was to phase them (rather than tackling too much at once), so I’m not too worried, but I am disappointed in myself. Part of the rationale for this check-in post is to hold myself accountable to keep working, so hopefully this will help me get back on track.

February – Yoga every day

This is the one goal I’m rocking!

twisted headstand

I started right on February 1st, and I haven’t missed a day yet. What and how much I do each day depends on what my schedule looks like and what my body needs, but I’ve done at least 15 minutes every day, and usually I practice for an hour.

March – Spanish every day

Guys, I’m embarrassed to admit this, but it is March 19th… and I haven’t practiced my spanish once!!

Well, I take that back. I “practice” in that John and I speak in spanglish spanish randomly throughout the day, but that’s all spanish that I already know, and it’s not at all what I meant by this goal. The point was to spend a few minutes with my Rosetta Stone each day to keep learning more.

Ideally, I would like to do this first thing in the morning (because I’m a morning person). The problem is that my mornings are full of blog reading (and sharing of my own posts on all the networks). Fellow bloggers know what I’m talking about, non-bloggers… let’s just say it’s slightly crazy how much time we spend on this stuff. 🙂 Anyway, that’s really no excuse. When you really want to do something, you make it a priority, so it’s up to me to make it a priority. Again, I’m hoping admitting my complete failure on this month’s goal so far will help motivate me!

So that’s where I am today! I’ll keep posting updates as the year goes on, and feel free to challenge me and send me harassing emails, comments, and tweets to keep me from slacking. 🙂

Questions: How are you doing on your goals/resolutions for 2014? Any tips for keeping in touch with loved ones? Do you speak any other languages? (A lo mejor Español??) If so, how did you learn?

Inspiring change for International Women’s Day

Today is International Women’s Day, and this year’s theme is inspiring change.

When Jan contacted me about linking up to celebrate, I was very excited, but I wasn’t sure what to write about at first. Women around the world face so many issues, and in many countries women are fighting for basic rights. It was hard to know where to start.

No matter what women are facing that needs changing, change takes strength and courage. While we don’t often associate that kind of fortitude with physical strength, becoming physically stronger changes the way you view yourself and your abilities and that can inspire change.

inspiring change through strength

Strength is empowering.

Investing in your physical strength makes you feel more capable, more independent. It’s a feeling of power.

Strength is freedom.

In whatever form, a feat of strength is a rush. Whether it’s an inversion or arm balance in yoga or moving some insanely heavy weights, the feeling is the same. It feels like flying. It feels like anything is possible.

Strength is confidence.

You feel unstoppable. When you do something with your body that you never thought was possible, it makes you believe that you can do anything.

Power, freedom, and confidence inspire women to break the mold, pursue their dreams, and be their own vision of womanhood.

inspiring change by changing the conversation

As bloggers and as women, we have the power to inspire change by changing the conversation.

We can shift the focus away from weight loss and calories.

We can stop competing with each other and start supporting each other.

We can remind each other that we are all beautiful, we are all strong, and we are all worthy.

No questions, just your thoughts on International Women’s Day and the “inspiring change” theme. <3

But… what did you eat?

I’ve been feeling super disconnected from blogland lately. I haven’t been reading as much as usual or writing as much as usual. I realize this rarely shows as much on the outside to readers, but it’s definitely felt odd to me.

There are a few reasons. First, life happens, so my focus has been on other things the past couple of weeks. Don’t worry, nothing serious. 🙂

Second, I don’t want to post for the sake of posting. Sometimes it’s been hard to resist the urge to just churn out a quick post, but I know rushing and posting just to get a post up will mean quantity but not necessarily quality.

Last but not least, I’ve been thinking about what I really want to be writing about. It’s part of finding my blogging voice. I’m not sure what that’s going to look like exactly, but I have some ideas, like refocusing on fitness, posting more workouts again, and sharing more of my yoga journey.

I’m rethinking why I do certain things as a blogger. Overtime, certain things have become habits. I love a good routine, but I don’t want to post for MIMM or WIAW just because it’s Monday or Wednesday. I may still do them from time to time, but not every week.

So that’s why I’m not talking food this week (sorry! I mean, there’s a picture of a smoothie up there). Writing about what I’ve eaten lately has felt redundant with my meal plans, and I don’t feel sharing a day of eats is right for me right now either.

I hope you’ll stick with me, even if things change a bit around here. <3

And, since this post is short on pictures, here’s an adorable shot of Saige and Luna!

Reebok + Oscars

That really sums up my weekend.

Saturday morning I was invited to an event at Reebok Fithub for fitness professionals.

It was a chance to network, check out some gear, and learn more about Reebok’s vision for its Fithub stores.

Reebok is hoping to create a “Starbucks” of fitness, a place where people go to shop, but also a place to hang out with like-minded people, get fitness advice, and even train.

They offer lots of classes (which I believe are free). I may even teach a Zumba class there! I love when stores connect with community like that.

Our location in Westchester is one of only a few right now. Most are in NYC but there is one in DC and one outside Boston, and hopefully they are spreading.

why isn't this in every dressing room?

IMG_5480In addition to networking, we did a mini workout. I was in jeans, so I got some free pants so I wouldn’t feel left out. 🙂 Sadly no pictures of the group workout, I guess I got too in the zone.

After the event, this weekend was all about the Oscars. Our good friends host a big Oscar party, and we had only seen one of the movies, so Saturday night we went to see American Hustle (loved), and Sunday we watched Gravity on demand before baking some beer cupcakes and rushing off to the party!

I know, I walked the red carpet, it’s a pretty big deal. 🙂 We had a lot of fun, but I still have a lot of movies to see!

Questions: What do you think of Reebok Fithub? Would you go to classes there? Did you watch the Oscars?

Things I’m loving

I feel like things have been a little serious around here this week, so I thought I’d lighten things up by highlighting some of the health and fitness things I’m loving lately.

Any guesses what this monster is?

No it’s not some weird sea creature, it’s our new memory foam mattress topper! It’s still expanding – it take’s 48 hours – which is why it looks so weird. It also means that I haven’t actually slept on it yet. That said, I am soooo excited. John and I haven’t been sleeping well and have been having some back pain so we thought we’d try it out. We’re planning to invest in a new mattress post-law school, but we read a topper like this is a great way to revive an old mattress short-term.

I’ve also been loving the Olympics, the athletes are seriously so inspiring. Figure skating is by far my favorite in the winter games. Earlier this week the German pairs team came out and I fell in love with this costume:

pink jumpsuit 2 pink jumpsuit 1

Probably most people hated it. Not this girl. Photos are from this article which has even more.

Since I probably shouldn’t be rocking that outfit anytime soon (as much as I’d like to), can someone please get me this tank instead?

Heh, heh, am I right fellow HP fans? Everyone else is probably super confused. Just trust me, it’s hilarious.

For my fellow yogis (and everyone really), I’m also obsessing over everything in the SuperLoveTees shop.

And finally, if you’re dealing with this latest storm:

Questions: Fellow Harry Potter fangirls (or boys)? Do you love fun workout tops as much as I do? Are you secretly wishing you owned that bodysuit?

Blend meetup, food, & football {MIMM}

Happy Monday! I hope you had a marvelous weekend, I know I did. Thanks to Katie for hosting the Marvelous in My Monday party!

This weekend was extra exciting because I had my very first blend (blog-friend) meet-up with the lovely Amy. We realized a little while ago that we don’t actually live very far apart, so we met in the middle for a lunch date. Not surprisingly, she is just as nice and fabulous in person. I love that blogging connects me to such amazing people.

That lunch also became dinner, for both me and John, because the portions were large enough to feed a small army.

Look at that steam! I love when fajitas come out all sizzling and intense. Needless to say, it was delicious.

My original workout plan for Saturday was spinning and yoga, but when I got to the gym that morning all the bikes were taken! I was super bummed because I had really been looking forward to class, but that’s life. So instead, I went for a long (speed) walk with John and the dogs that took us down by the river. It was so beautiful with all of the ice.

IMG_4912 Sunday I made up for it with spinning, yoga, and even a run! Shocking, I know, but it was almost 50 degrees and I just wanted to get outside. It was a sloooow run, partly because of all the snow/mud/ice and partly because it had been so long. I’m doing another yoga challenge on instagram (actually two), so of course I had to stop for a shot in the woods.

I love the trail by our house. I’m really going to miss it when we move.

After our run it was time for groceries and prep for the game! John had some kind of boneless wings (barf!) and I made Davida’s white bean kale & artichoke dip, which we both loved.

IMG_4933I rocked my Patriots shirt since I was cheering against the Broncos in their honor. Obviously I was VERY happy with the result of the game.

IMG_4934We also had nachos after half time.

Like that action shot?

We had planned an ice cream bar for dessert, but we were too full. Guess I have that to look forward to this week!

Questions: How was your weekend? Did you watch the Super Bowl? Favorite commercial/play/moment?

Weekly meal & workout plan {1/26}

Helloooooo from Boston! Actually, I’m writing this the night before we go, but I’ll be in Boston when it publishes. 🙂  More on that tomorrow, but for now, here’s my plan for this week.

workout plan

My recipe organizing plan has sadly been put on hold. Turns out, I don’t have a new enough version of the Mac operating system to run the software I wanted. Sad face! I can upgrade to the newest version (Mavericks) for free, but there have been a lot of reported problems, so I’m too afraid. Pinterest will just have to do for now.

Monday: Black bean spinach enchiladas {recipe}

Tuesday: Cashew thai quinoa salad {recipe}

Wednesday: Something John will make (TBD, probably fried rice or rice and eggs)

Thursday: Creamy guacamole and grilled corn pasta {recipe}

Friday: Falafel {recipe} with some kind of sides or salad

Saturday: Quinoa coconut patties (because I miss summer) {recipe}

SundayPIzza – because we’ve finally accepted that we hate cooking after grocery shopping

Super excited for more Krav Maga this week, and for spinning. I couldn’t spin this weekend since we’re out of town… even though I spaced and wrote it on the schedule last week. Oops.

Monday: Yoga + teach Zumba (I’m subbing again!)

Tuesday: Krav Maga (I haven’t reserved my spot yet, so if not I’ll TRX instead)

Wednesday: Practice PiYo Strength + teach Zumba

Thursday: Yoga + Krav Maga

Friday: TRX

Saturday: Yoga + Spinning

Sunday: Yoga + Spinning

Saturday is the first day of February, which means yoga every day for #12months12changes. More on that next week. Hope the rest of your weekend is fabulous!

Questions: Do you have energy to cook after grocery shopping? Are you missing summer?

Friday thoughts: Krav Maga & Zumba

I don’t know what’s with me, but I couldn’t seem to get into a groove this week. I had a very easy week at school thanks to the Monday holiday and the storm on Tuesday, so I should have been able to get caught up and then propel way ahead in the rest of life. But… that didn’t happen.

Since I’m feeling disorganized, you’re stuck with my random, disjointed thoughts today – sorry!

Last night I finally went my first Krav Maga class!

I tried to snap a secret picture from the waiting area… but you can’t really see anything. Next time I’ll be less awkwardly shy and take a real picture.

In the first few minutes or so, I was kind of disappointed. It didn’t seem like the experience was going to be what I expected. I was completely lost. But after the warm-up we broke into smaller groups based on experience so I was with one instructor and five other students who had been training for less than a month. After that, I LOVED it. It was a good workout and super empowering. My knuckles got a little banged up from all the punches, but my instructor said they get used to it.

I’m not sure the picture does it justice. When I got home, I showed John was I learned, and he was he was scared and would have to sleep with the dogs, ha! I told him he should feel safer. 🙂

I’m excited to go back for another class next week. Once I have more classes under my belt, I’ll do a more complete review. But so far I would definitely recommend it. It’s so empowering! And you do get a workout, my calves are super sore today from bouncing around on the balls of my feet for an hour.

In other news, my Zumba plan for the Cody App is sooooo close to being ready to launch!

We’re waiting for Apple to approve it, I guess because it would be an in-app purchase? I have a preview video to share with you guys, but I decided to wait until the plan is actually available to share it.

In the meantime, I hope you’ll download the app itself! I really love the community. They are so supportive and I’ve “met” a lot of really cool people. I’m so lucky I learned about it from Elise! Maybe I’ll dedicate a full post to the app to give you guys a better idea of how it works.

That didn’t end up being too disjointed. Victory! Time to go get the rest of my life in order.

Questions: Have you ever taken a self-defense class? Would you like to learn more about Cody? What are your plans for the weekend?

Giveaway winner!

I know, my schedule is totally off today. My planned post had some technical difficulties, so you’ll have to wait until next week 🙂

In the meantime, I’m excited to announce The Color Run giveaway winner.
